European Jesus not appropriate
by Howard Piggee Jr., Rantoul, Ill.
The April 3 article “Victim and Victor” by John D. Rempel is good. However, I’m appalled by the illustrative picture used. This picture portrays a European or Caucasian Jesus. The picture on page 8 is a little more nebulous.
Evidence provided by psychologists Kenneth and Mamie Clark to the U.S. Supreme Court in the case of Brown vs. Board of Education demonstrated the negative effect of these types of images. Even the court agreed that these had a bad effect in overturning the “separate but equal” status of schools.
I hope that as the Mennonite church continues to carry the Anabaptist message around the world The Mennonite will be more aware and will discontinue giving us the European Jesus.
Editor’s note: The illustration is intended to show the painting Rempel discusses in the article.
