Bankrupted by heart attack
by Dale E. Lehman, Myakka City, Fla.
Reflecting on “Health Care for Everyone” by Glenn E. Miller (April 17), I was once again struck by the critical need for a better system of addressing health-care coverage for our brothers and sisters in Mennonite Church USA. Personal experience with this issue became reality for my family after I suffered a massive heart attack; that led to a heart transplant in December 1999. As a result, we eventually were forced out of insurance coverage we had and had to resort to public assistance programs for required medications that Medicare won’t cover. This came only as a last resort after depleting all resources and losing everything.
I am pleased to see Mennonite Church USA’s agenda to look for a solution to this problem facing so many people today. Losing everything and being forced into bankruptcy due to health-care issues and expenses—while the church just looks on—is not the picture of Jesus I want the world to see.
