Harold P. Dyck, business, political leader, dies

HESSTON, KAN.—Harold P. Dyck, 86, died May 29, leaving a legacy that will continue to grow—the Dyck Arboretum of the Plains—in Hesston.
He grew up on a farm in a Holdeman Mennonite family, the oldest child of Jacob and Fannie Elizabeth (Yost) Dyck. He married Elva Mae Hershberger on Sept. 19, 1942. They moved to South Dakota and Pennsylvania, where Harold served in Civilian Public Service.
Dyck was sales manager and vice president of Hesston Corporation (now AGCO), mayor of Hesston from 1969 to 1971 and served 18 years in the Kansas State House of Representatives. He helped establish the Mennonite Foundation in Hesston and volunteered more than 20 years as its regional manager and estate planner.
He was a member of Hesston Mennonite Church and of various boards, including Mennonite Publishing House.
He is survived by his wife and their children, Gary, Joycelyn Cooley, Tom and Julia Roupp, 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
