Nearly 200 junior highers, who stayed at a hotel near the convention center, raised almost $5,000 before and during San José 2007.
Before the convention, each junior high student received $5 in the mail to put toward raising funds.
Erin Martin of Cary, N.C., said she planned to make jewelry but in the end decided simply to ask for donations.
She tripled her starting funds—providing $15 for the Congo fund.
Three girls from Pennsylvania raised $158 by selling cookies in their neighborhoods. Another group of students raised $250 from a garage sale.
Martin said the highlight from the week was the worship band, One Way Up, made up of Hesston (Kan.) College graduates.
Her home church worships mostly through hymns. “I am more happy with stuff I can get up and dance to,” she said. She also said she made new friends at the convention.
On Friday evening The Panic Squad, an improve comedy group, performed for the junior higher convention. The Panic Squad consists of Andrew Bright, Cliff Prang and Scott Campbell.
