Voices from the Valley learning tour

SAN JOSÉ, Calif.—On July 2, more than 20 people traveled to the Central Valley of California to hear the voices of those afraid to be heard, afraid to draw attention to their suffering.
Participants in Voices from the Valley, a learning tour on immigration sponsored by West Coast Mennonite Central Committee and Pacific Southwest Mennonite Conference came to learn truths about complex immigration issues firsthand.
The group spent time with field laborers, ate a meal and listened. One laborer talked about his hope for a change in his immigration status. Another showed pride by knowing when fruit is ripe for picking.
When the workers had to return to the fields, the group went to First Mennonite Church in Reedley, where they met with local farm owners and church leaders. They said they considered their Latino laborers an integral part of the community and even their own families.
Paul Buxman, a local Mennonite farmer, said farming is about people, not just peaches. It’s about getting close enough to hear and know people so that their stories intertwine with yours.--Jodi Read and Corinne Edington for mPress
