Missional and Mennonite
by Carole Boshart, Eugene, Ore.
“Missional and Mennonite” (July 3) brought to mind the Vatican statement that the Roman Catholic Church is the only true church because it has the “means of salvation” and that all other churches are inferior because they cannot trace back their ancestry and leadership to the original disciples. I agree with Roth that we need to keep our distinctiveness and be more assertive in what we believe and why. And we should be more discerning about which denominations or systems of faith we see reflecting Christian values and lifestyles. However, we need to be cautious as to how we express our “missional” stance and how strongly we carry out our evangelistic pursuits.
The Anabaptist faith has a strong future. Unlike the Roman Catholic Church, I do not look back in our ancestry and lineage for authenticity but if we are living an authentic Christian life now. As long as we dialogue on what direction we are going and hold to what we believe to be true, our future is assured.
