Missional and Mennonite II
by Paul H. Martin, Akron, Pa.
I appreciate John D. Roth’s treatment of the uniqueness of our church’s emphasis on the call to wholehearted discipleship and that the life of this identity with the needy of society is “not for loners” but for those open to life in a community of faith (July 3). I agree that this be guarded as a value not to be left slip to the wayside.
An absence of the core of the way of Jesus is found in most of the creeds of “Christendom,” which hop from “born of the Virgin Mary” to “crucified under Pontius Pilate and raised from the dead.” What Jesus lived and taught is foundational in our tradition. It is up to us to keep it as a value in the content of our teachings and practice. And though the perpetuation of our theological gift may affect our growth in numbers, let us take heart that the challenge confronts every new generation.
