NEWTON, Kan.—Discipleship, Encounter, Outreach! (DEO), a short-term mission program, has ended. The program that ran from 2006 to 2007 is the final DEO group.
Dwight Regier, director of DEO, says this is the end of DEO but not the end of the vision for a discipleship program, and there is an understanding among DEO staff that they are looking to form something new.
Last year, DEO supported two full teams. but this year it did not have enough participants, says Ryan Miller, news director for Mennonite Mission Network, a partner of DEO.
Darrell Gascho, director of Reaching and Discipling, says there are now discussions between DEO, RAD and other programs to explore possibilities of creating a single discipleship program. Gascho notes the growing similarities between the RAD and DEO programs.
A letter sent to Mennonite Mission Network staff says: “During the past two years DEO and RAD have grown closer together in their mission philosophy, and even though they have their unique characteristics, personalities, pedagogies, etc., they do seem very compatible at this point.”
The board, staff and partners want to move quickly to determine how to put together a discipleship and service option as soon as possible, says Miller.
“It’s just very early in the decision-making process,” he adds.
The DEO program is a partnership of Mennonite Mission Network, Western District Conference, Mountain States Conference, South Central Conference, Central Plains Conference, Hesston (Kan.) College, Bethel College (North Newton, Kan.), churches and individuals.
