MDS to finish New Orleans home for woman turning 100 years old

by Everett J. Thomas

NEW ORLEANS - Rose Cosy will turn 100 on Oct. 13. She hopes that her Katrina-ravaged house will be finished by Mennonite Disaster Service volunteers in time for her birthday party. But when John Kroeker, MDS project manager, (see photo below) checked on her house and visited Cosy in her FEMA trailer on Aug. 23, she was waiting patiently.

"I'm waiting on the Lord," said Cosy. "You don't rush people when they are doing all they can to make you comfortable."

Since Hurricane Katrina made landfall on Aug. 29, 2005, MDS has completed 122 jobs in New Orleans including 85 cleanups, 34 minor repairs and three three major repairs. Volunteers also completed the spacious MDS facility in New Orleans that can house up to 40 volunteers at a time.

Although the MDS facility in New Orleans will close for the month of September, Kroeker says there are eight to ten houses lined up for the many volunteers who will participate in MDS work in New Orleans beginning in October. These projects include the first three complete "rebuilds" (demolition and new construction) by MDS in the New Orleans area.

The Mennonite will provide a two-year retrospective on MDS work in Mississippi and Louisiana in the Oct. 16 issue.
