Missional and Mennonite
by Mark Whitmer, Plain City, Ohio
John D. Roth hit the mark with his article (July 3). Mennonite Church USA seems to find its way into negative behaviors and mindsets by default, the way water naturally seeks the lowest level. Human nature causes people to take the path of least resistance. We should consider the thoughts of Spirit-led people like Roth, Lynn Miller, John Drescher, Peter Dyck and Nelson Kraybill in the light of Jesus’ teaching.
Being intentional is most effective as a witness tool when it’s the natural response to what we look to experience through God’s perfect love. Surely it’s God’s wish for us to intentionally love and serve others, teach our children, look for the truth and come to the realization that there are no shortcuts to the kingdom.
When we consider how much the Hebrews’ dependence on God in the Old Testament varied, it seems the key was leadership. In spite of our individual responsibility, everyone benefits when our ministers preach the gospel without fear of the inevitable fallout.
