Two fair board members talk to a relief sale participant Sept. 22, after a water heater tipped over and started a fire that destroyed four buildings around 1:30 a.m. at the Michiana Mennonite Relief Sale in Goshen, Ind. No one was hurt in the blaze at the Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds. The Elkhart Township fire chief estimated the fire damage at $250,000. Because electrical wires were damaged by the blaze, the Saturday portion of the event continued with limited electricity provided by generators. The preliminary total generated by the sale was $418,889, a new record.
