Nearly 2,000 friends, alumni, and students gathered September 15 on the campus of Lancaster Mennonite High School to enjoy the latest edition of the Eastern Mennonite University-Goshen College soccer rivalry.

The game was organized by a group of alumni from both institutions in the Lancaster area as a celebration of Mennonite Higher Education. According to Daryl Groff, lead organizer of the event, the game was about “increasing the exposure for and highlighting the quality of our Mennonite institutions in the eastern Pennsylvania area. Our hope is that other communities in the Mennonite church will adopt this model and invite athletic teams from our educational institutions into their communities as a way of supporting our colleges.” The presidents from both schools as well as admissions and development staff were in attendance promoting the colleges.

Goshen College won the men’s game 4-1 breaking a long-standing drought against EMU. In the second game, the Goshen and EMU ladies battled to a 0-0 tie after regulation and two sudden-death overtimes.

“This is a rivalry that goes quite a ways back, and athletics offers us a starting point to showcase our institutions to a lot of folks,” said Ken Pletcher, Goshen College athletic director. “We had a great turnout this weekend, and I think both institutions were very pleased with the results both on and off the field.”

Over 400 people attended a post-game reception that honored both schools and highlighted the strengths of each institution during a question and answer session with players from each team. The game was played on Lancaster Mennonite High Schools newly lighted artificial turf field.
