A modest proposal for Communion
by Richard F. Ross, Orrville, Ohio
“A Modest Proposal for Communion” by Marlene Kropf (Sept. 4) and the other articles in that issue on Communion richly blessed me. When I served as chaplain at the Garden Tomb in Jerusalem in the winter of 1983-84, we attended Sunday evening services at Evangelical Christ Church, Anglican, where Communion was observed on alternate Sunday evenings (and in every morning service). We learned that worshiping the Lord Jesus in this sacred service strengthened our faith immensely.
When we returned to our congregation at Hartville, Ohio, I encouraged our leadership to institute four Communion services annually, two traditional with foot washing, and two blended into our regular service. In subsequent congregations I did the same, and all of them continue this ministry. There were many confirmations. Were I to pastor churches today, I would encourage monthly Communion services. The closer we draw to Christ in Communion, the more “peaceably” we live with one another.
