Mennonites and Holocaust denial
by Ross L. Bender, Philadelphia
Re Bruce Leichty’s letter (Readers Say, Aug. 21): it should be pointed out that his group is in fact an anti-Semitic organization with connections to known Holocaust deniers as well as a variety of bizarre conspiracy theorists. A glance at their Web site makes this obvious.
The German Mennonite collusion with the Nazis in World War II is detailed in the new Mennonite World Conference history of European Mennonites, Testing Faith and Tradition. John D. Thiesen’s 1999 Pandora Press book, Mennonite and Nazi? Attitudes Among Mennonite Colonists in Latin America, 1933-1945, also examines this obscene chapter in Mennonite history.
In light of our past, we should be forthright in renouncing and denouncing any link to Holocaust denial. To say the least, our past makes us suspect among Jews when we testify about injustices in Palestine.
