Principled liberalism

by Edwin G. Moyer, Quakertown, Pa.

Print Article

I applaud Dennis R. Koehn for being willing to “speak out” on his beliefs as a “principled liberal” (Speaking Out, Aug. 7).

While he may draw criticism from conservatives for not expressing strong emphasis on “getting people saved,” he expresses principles basic to the Christian faith. He emphasizes the values of “interdependence, justice, respect, compassion, service, nonviolent peace building and community.” Are these not the essential values of a Christian—values Jesus spoke of and lived out? Just as Jesus spoke about God’s immediate kingdom being already present, Koehn is concerned about helping bring about the kingdom of God already here and now, not just to getting people “saved” for future life.

When people see the kind of values expressed by Koehn, they may then be attracted to Christianity. I thank God for liberals like Koehn; may they receive the respect they deserve.
