LANCASTER, Pa.—A group of Lancaster-area alumni from Goshen (Ind.) College and Eastern Mennonite University (EMU) in Harrisonburg, Va., organized the colleges’ soccer games held on Sept. 15 at Lancaster Mennonite High School as a celebration of Mennonite higher education.

The group invited the men’s and women’s teams from the colleges to participate and raised $12,000 from local supporters to make it possible.

Daryl Groff, lead organizer of the event, says the game was about “increasing the exposure for and highlighting the quality of our Mennonite institutions in the eastern Pennsylvania area. Our hope is that other communities in the Mennonite church will adopt this model and invite athletic teams from our educational institutions into their communities as a way of supporting our colleges.”

The athletic departments from both schools are committed to holding athletic contests in Mennonite communities when invited, says David King, athletic director of EMU.

“After the invitation from the Lancaster group, Ken Pletcher of Goshen College and I put together a template or model for holding these events in Mennonite communities,” says King.
Current plans include baseball games for Goshen, EMU and Bluffton (Ohio) University in Sarasota, Fla., in March, and women’s volleyball matches with the three schools in Bluffton in the fall of 2008.—Anna Groff
