WHEREAS Mennonite Disaster Service wishes to send Everett Thomas, editor of The Mennonite, to examine projects and interview people affected by the August 2005 hurricane and flooding in the New Orleans, La., (NOLA) area for the purpose of publishing an overview of MDS work in that area during the last biennium, and,
WHEREAS the board of directors for The Mennonite, Inc., has approved up to 10 days of Everett Thomas’ 2007 sabbatical for this work.
THEREFORE
1. MDS will create an itinerary for this reporting trip that begins in NOLA Monday afternoon, Aug. 20, 2007 (leaving South Bend, Ind., that morning) and concludes on Wednesday evening, Aug. 29 (returning to South Bend Thursday morning, Aug. 30).
2. MDS will pay all transportation expenses (air fare, rental vehicle, tolls, gas, parking, etc.) for this trip. MDS will pay for lodging and provide a per diem of up to $35.00 for meals.
3. MDS will not pay for Everett’s time during this trip.
4. When in NOLA, Everett will take 2-3 hours to visit the work done by members of College Mennonite Church in Slidell, La. However this work is not part of MDS’ work and will not be included in the reporting.
5. During and/or at the conclusion of this trip, Everett will contact Scott Sundberg for clarification about any matters needing clarification. This will include discussion of any matters Everett deems to be sensitive and needing special care in reporting.
6. Everett Thomas will have complete journalistic freedom in his reporting; MDS will not be permitted to alter this reporting in The Mennonite.
7. After the reporting appears in The Mennonite and if desired by MDS, the reporting will be distributed to other Meetinghouse publications, again without alteration by MDS.
8. The Mennonite will have first right of publication for this reporting; after the reporting appears in The Mennonite and/or its Web site and e-zine, MDS is free to use it as often and in as many places as it wishes. However, any changes to the reporting in such uses by MDS must be approved by Everett Thomas. If Everett considers the changes to be substantive and cannot approve them, MDS may publish the material without credit (no byline).
