MCC ships aid to Nicaragua after hurricane

AKRON, Pa.—Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) is shipping canned meat and relief supplies worth more than $180,000 to communities devastated by Hurricane Felix in Nicaragua.
Felix struck northeastern Nicaragua as a powerful, category five hurricane on Sept. 4. MCC’s aid will be distributed by a partner organization, Accion Medica Cristiana, to remote farming communities that lost homes and crops during the storm.
The affected population includes many Miskito Indians and other indigenous people who are among the poorest groups in Nicaragua, according to Belinda Forbes, a spokesperson for Accion Medica Cristiana.
Many local families will need food aid for the next six months because of the hurricane, Forbes says.
MCC is currently shipping 71,400 pounds of canned turkey to Nicaragua from its Material Resource Center in Ephrata, Pa. MCC is also planning to ship 2,000 relief kits and 5,000 health kits to Nicaragua.
Contributions should be designated “2007 Hurricane Relief” and may be made at any MCC office or online at mcc.org/donate.—Mennonite Central Committee
