Why start at the top with health-care access?

by Luke M. Drescher, Harrisonburg, Va.

Print Article

While I agree with much in the ACHE letter (Readers Say, Oct. 2), I take issue with a few of their statements.
If we can dare to address government concerning “the least of these,” why are we starting at the “top,” as they do in addressing this issue?

As a member of the church, I find no precedent in Scripture to first take care of the leaders or contracted “servants” prior to taking care of “the least of these.”

Although this is suggested as a beginning model, I suggest again that we just might be starting at the wrong end. I do not believe the greatest lack of health-care insurance is at the top level of our church. I find it difficult to agree with the statement of strong affirmation on the vote at San José, since it appears somewhat like our congressional members voting to give themselves a pay raise.
