New schools for racial/ethnic Mennonites

by Everett J. Thomas

Print Article

Conrad Kanagy reports data from the Church Member Profile 2006 survey at the "Education Opportunities Summit" Nov.12-13 in Middlebury, Ind. Starting three to five new schools in communities where under-represented racial/ethnic Mennonites live is one recommendation from a task force established by Mennonite Education Agency.

The group's recommendations also include partnerships to deliver Anabaptist-Mennonite education opportunities in urban areas and the creation of two endowment funds: one to fund racial/ethnic students attending Mennonite schools and a second to fund local initiatives in support of racial/ethnic Mennonites. Some 60 educational and racial/ethnic leaders met to review and approve the task force's recommendations. The recommendations now go to the MEA board for action at its February 2008 meeting.
