NEWTON, Kan.—Gilberto Flores, longtime denominational minister and director of the Instituto Biblico Anabautista (IBA), on Feb. 1 assumed a new role as director of missional church advancement for the denomination with Mennonite Church USA Executive Leadership.
Flores will serve as a missional church catalyst for Executive Leadership staff and work with conference ministers and churchwide agencies throughout Mennonite Church USA.
Jim Schrag, executive director of Mennonite Church USA, says Flores’ new role will be to help all parts of the church reach toward their goal to become a missional church.
Flores was formerly a Mennonite pastor in Guatemala and academic dean of the Mennonite seminary SEMILLA in Guatemala City, before joining the former General Conference Mennonite Church staff as director of Hispanic resource ministries. More recently, he has served as director of IBA for Mennonite Mission Network and Mennonite Church USA Executive Leadership.
Flores will help develop a theological foundation for helping all parts of the church become a missional church community. His role is to be a connector and enabler of people and programs. He will work collaboratively with other staff in the churchwide system including the missional church development staff in Mennonite Mission Network.
Flores will continue to serve as a denominational minister with area conferences and provide consultation for the ministerial leadership system. He’ll also work with racial/ethnic leaders to help adapt missional church strategies into multiple cultural settings.
The IBA training program for Hispanic leaders will continue under direction of Mennonite Education Agency and support from the Mission Network. Flores will continue to serve as a consultant to the program.—Mennonite Church USA
