Kanagy responds
by Conrad Kanagy, Church Members Profile 2006Thank you for these questions. Here are my responses: In 1989, 63 percent of members attended Sunday school every Sunday, and 44 percent of members were involved in a small group that met regularly. In 2006, 53 percent attended Sunday school weekly and 38 percent participated in a small group that meets at least two or three times per month. Using these measures, both Sunday school attendance and small group participation have declined since 1989. While I am not sure what differences in membership definition Ahlgrim suggests, any meaningful differences—should they exist—do not invalidate the 35-year decline in proportion of Mennonites of childbearing age. Regardless of whom we compare ourselves with, the reality of this decline remains.
