Light a lamp for peace between U.S. and Iran

by Mennonite Central Committee

Print Article

AKRON, Pa.—As tensions remain high between the United States and Iran, participants in a Mennonite Central Committee (MCC)-led delegation to Iran in February (see March 20, page 24) are urging congregations to light oil lamps as a reminder to pray for peace and for the people of Iran.

The delegation met with the Iranian president, a former president and other political and religious leaders in Iran. At the end of each meeting, the U.S. group presented Iranian leaders with ceramic oil lamps made by Indiana potter Dick Lehman, as well as quilted wall hangings.

“[Each lamp] was a concrete symbol of our commitment to remain in prayer for them,” says Ron Flaming, MCC’s director of international programs. Delegation members told leaders the Bible calls on Christians to remember the leaders of the world with prayer and that the lamps signified a promise to remember Iran and its leaders.

Congregations can order ceramic oil lamps from Dick Lehman pottery by calling 574-534-1162, or other lamps or candles can be used.
