On Aug. 20, in Wardok Province, Afghanistan, a group of armed men detained Al Geiser (pictured), a Mennonite businessman from Kidron, Ohio, who has worked in Afghanistan since 2000.

Family members learned of Geiser's release on Tuesday. He is now with United States Embassy officials in Afghanistan.

A statement released Thursday said:

"Al Geiser of Kidron, Ohio, has been on the hearts and in the prayers of many people around the world for the past number of weeks. It is with thankful hearts to God and all those who have worked on Al's behalf we are able to announce that after 56 days of captivity Al has been freed and is safely in the U.S. Embassy. He is in good health and will be traveling back to Ohio next week. Your support and prayers have been appreciated by the family and all those involved. Thanks be to God!"

Geiser, 61, and an Afghan partner have worked with hydroelectric projects, helping communities use water as a power source in rural Afghanistan.

Geiser's wife, Gladys, 60, has taught in a Kabul school. Both are members of Kidron (Ohio) Mennonite Church which helped support the Geisers' work in Afghanistan.
