Baptized too early?
by Ann Fetters, Wichita, Kan.Regarding the importance of baptism (“Remembering Our Baptism,” Sept. 16): I’ve come to think that Mennonite churches may pressure youth to take this step too early. Many are only 12 or 13 when they are approached with this decision; at that age they may simply be doing what is expected of them. While we should certainly affirm Christian commitment during those years, young people should instead be presented with the opportunity in their later years of high school so they have the maturity to make the decision for themselves. This would allow them to have a deeper understanding of what it means to be a member of the body of Christ.
