Good fiction teaches us to be empathetic

by Gloria Swartzendruber, Pigeon, Mich.

Print Article

I was pleased to read that Gordon Houser, in “How Good Fiction Reflects God’s Perfect Love” (Oct. 21), enjoyed Marilynne Robinson’s new novel, Home. It is waiting on a shelf in my home to be read. I enjoyed Gilead so much that I asked for Home as a birthday gift. Good fiction, like other great art (music, painting) should teach us to be empathetic and should broaden our minds.
