A pastor questions the Bible he loves
by Edwin G. Moyer, Quakertown, Pa.I feel compelled to express my appreciation to both Timothy J. Schultz and the editors of The Mennonite for having the courage to deal with the controversial subject of how we view the Bible (“A Pastor Questions the Bible He Loves,” Nov. 20, 2007). Schultz opens himself to criticism by sharing how he feels about taking everything in the Bible literally. It seems to me Schultz’s (a pastor) view of taking an honest look at some of the Bible’s “hard passages” is the only way we are going to reach and retain the youth among us. In their search for a faith that is meaningful, young people today feel the need to look at the hard questions about the Bible. Only when we are honest about our doubts can we appreciate its deeper truths.
