Why is school closing?
by Elvina Martens, Goshen, Ind.
In the March 18 issue of The Mennonite is a news article about Mennonite Education Agency’s Annual Report. The article says, “The value of Mennonite education should be revealed because of the important role these institutions and programs play in providing a foundation for the church of today and the future.”
If this is true, why does Chicago Mennonite Learning Center have to close its doors at the end of the current school year? I would like to propose that all Mennonite churches who have scholarship programs give the equivalent of one scholarship a year to one of the urban Mennonite schools or a scholarship to a local Mennonite school for a local African-American or Hispanic student. This would be one of the most effective ways to break down racial prejudice in the Mennonite church.
