Speakers named for Paraguay 2009

Outgoing and incoming Mennonite World Conference presidents will speak at evening worship services at Assembly Gathered 2009 in Asunción, Paraguay.

Nancy Heisey, current president, will be the keynote speaker at the opening celebration on July 14, and the July 18 service will feature president-elect Danisa Ndlovu. Heisey and Ndlovu will both address the overarching Assembly 15 theme, “Come Together in the Way of Jesus Christ,” based on the key assembly biblical text, Philippians 2:1-11.

The events will conclude on July 19 with a mass outdoor rally in Asunción on the theme “On the Way Together; First Stop—Asunción.” Alfred Neufeld, Paraguayan theologian, will preach.

Each day will have a morning Bible study and an evening worship service with study leaders and speakers from different regions:

“The Way of Jesus Christ,” July 15:
• Morning: Elfriede Verón (Paraguay), who teaches at Instituto Bíblico Asunción—a regional campus of Evangelical University of Paraguay, will speak on Philippians 2:1-11.
• Evening: Nzuzi Mukawa, (Congo), academic dean at the missiology school in Kinshasa, will speak on Micah 6:1-8.

“Uniting in Christ,” July 16:
• Morning: Antonio Gonzales (Spain), author and university lecturer, will speak on John 17:16-26.
• Evening: Ditrich Pana (Paraguay), president of the Convención Iglesias Evangélicas Unidas-Enlhet Paraguay, will speak on Acts 2:46-47.

“Serving like Christ,” July 17:
• Morning: Jenny Neme (Colombia), director of Conscientious Objection and Peace Building Environments at Justapaz in Bogotá, will speak on Isaiah 58:1-10.
• Evening: Elizabeth Soto (Puerto Rico/USA), coordinator of field education at Lancaster (Pa.) Theological Seminary, will speak on Mark 10:35-45.

“Go together in the way of Jesus Christ,” July 18

• Morning: Chris Marshall (New Zealand), associate professor of Christian Studies at Victoria University of Wellington, will speak on Ephesians 4:1-6.
