Jesus, peace and Islam
by A. Dale Welty, Wakarusa, Ind.
Thank you, Seth Ramer (Oct. 21, 2008) and Jack T. Miller (Dec. 2, 2008), for your well-written letters addressing Mennonite Central Committee’s “peace” meetings with President Ahmadinejad of Iran. Ahmadinejad’s roots go back to Genesis 16, which readily explains his hatred of Israel. Sorry, but peace lamps won’t do the trick. I don’t think Jesus had global peace meetings with government leaders in mind when he gave the Great Commission in Matthew 28 to his followers.
Peace is not the absence of trouble but the presence of God. I see no evidence of Jesus, God’s Son, being presented to Ahmadinejad in any of the meetings with him. 1 Corinthians 1:18-25 speaks to the importance of the cross as the only gateway to eternal peace that Jesus alone can bring.
