With magazine ceases publication

After the final "Summer 2009" issue, Faith & Life Resources plans to discontinue the 41-year-old With magazine, due to decline in subscriptions.

Founding editor J. Lorne Peachey said on May 17 that he feels overwhelmed that it lasted for 41 years. "I didn't expect it to go this long," he said.

Peachey said he thinks the reason With "stuck" was that it "told youth that the church was interested in them … I hope the church will find new ways to tell kids they are important."

With was subsidized and Peachey acknowledged the difficulty in knowing whether or not a subsidized publication is reaching its intended audience. However, at least while he was editor, he said he has faith that it reached youth.

For example, Peachey misquoted lyrics from a Beatles song in one issue.

"The letters from youth, which were most of them, were upset that the Beatles were misquoted," Peachey said. "The letters from adults, and there were several, were upset that the Beatles were even mentioned."

Peachey also said that he believes With changed people's lives.

"I have no regrets whatsoever," he said.

The final issue will celebrate the four decades of With, with contributions from all the past editors. Current editor Carol Duerksen has edited With for the past 18 years.
