Donations extend life of CPT projects

by Christian Peacemaker Teams

Print Article

In early May, Christian Peacemaker Teams (CPT) reported it may need to suspend and scale back peacemaking work because funds are low. However, donor's generosity have extended some projects.

CPT has reinstituted project work in Al Khalil/Hebron and postponed the closure of work in Iraq at least until the end of 2009.

"CPT's first quarter income this year from individuals and congregations is ahead of what we'd expected, but we're clearly not out of the woods yet," says Carol Rose, CPT codirector.

"We are still unable to welcome new, stipended workers for teams in the field.  But with the help of donors’ ongoing generosity, we hope to be able to end that freeze."

CPTers continue to implement cost-cutting measures that will ensure every donated dollar is spent thoughtfully, she says.

CPT needs to move the current Chicago office and training facilities during this financially troubled time.

However, the current economy provides an opportunity for CPT to purchase a property for less than one-third of what it sold for a couple of years ago. CPT hopes to manage this purchase without taking any money away from projects in the field.

CPT is in need of:

Donated labor: Various parts of the property need work, from a wheelchair ramp to windows, from siding to cement, from plumbing to paint.  The yard needs weeding and once the repairs are finished, the house will need a good scrubbing before moving day."

Donations: Donations of  materials and funds that do not lessen support for program work.

Interest free loans: Loans of $5,000 or more to further reduce or eliminate the need for a commercial loan
