Two Mennonites among 12 acquitted
by Everett J. ThomasPrint Article Email to a Friend
Two Mennonite Church USA members were among 12 protesters acquitted of all charges on May 26 after they were arrested on Jan. 16 (see "Mennonites Join Antigun Violence Rally" in the Feb. 3 issue of The Mennonite).
Fred Kauffman, former pastor at West Philly Mennonite Church, and Drick Boyd, a member of that congregation and professor at Eastern University, near Philadelphia, were part of an ecumenical group protesting gun violence at Colosimo's Gun Shop during the gathering "Heeding God's Call: A Gathering on Peace," a joint effort of Church of the Brethren, Mennonite Church USA and Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, Religious Society of Friends, held Jan. 13-17 in Philadelphia.
The group was attempting to call attention to gun violence and have the proprietor sign a code of conduct for gun shop owners. Kauffman is Philadelphia program coordinator for the Mennonite Central Committee.
