by Everett J. Thomas

Print Article

GOSHEN, Ind.—According to its annual report, Mennonite Central Committee received nearly the same income during its most recently completed fiscal year as it received during the 2007-08 fiscal year. However, expenses were $8 million more than the previous year. Those additional expenses contributed to an $8.3 million deficit as of March 31. Cash gifts from U.S. supporters totaled $13,221,000, which was down 1.6 percent from the previous year. Thrift shop and relief sale revenue was also down slightly, while income from government grants more than doubled, from $5.1 million to $10.4 million. Total income was $65.4 million and total expenses were $73.7 million.

Administration and fund-raising costs represented 18.5 percent of expenses. According to the report, MCC had 1,165 workers around the world as of March 31.

We wish to comment on "MCC had $8 million deficit in 2008-09 year," from The Mennonite of August 17. Entering 2008-09, MCC intended to spend down $5.4 million of reserves. This included $3.0 million of previously received restricted income for the 2004 tsunami, 2005 Gulf hurricanes, etc., and $2.4 million of other reserved funding. With income less than budgeted, we spent $3 million more from reserves, manageable for that year. Government grants mentioned in the article came almost entirely from Canada. With continued revenue declines this year, program budgets are reduced approximately 10%. We're hopeful that, now more than ever, constituency support will help us meet our commitments to the relief, development and peace efforts of Mennonite and Brethren in Christ churches around the world.
