On the road from Camiri to Charagua, Bolivia
Poem

In the unfamiliar land, through
which this ride takes
us, every look out
the window is a prayer.
The landscape holds mystery
and the eye gazes with wonder and intrigue;
speak, for your servant is listening.
Brush, tree, village, distant mountain,
cow on the road, budging only reluctantly;
this rutted dirt road is both
worn and glistening new.
In the front seat, the young
mother lifts up the corner
of her shirt and offers
her breast to the child who
takes it in with calm
delight.
Joel Miller is pastor of Cincinnati Mennonite Fellowship.
