Vengeance is mine?
by John Asa Hertzler, Edinburg, Va.
In Gordon Houser's fine Mediaculture column ("'Vengeance Is Mine' ... or Is It?," Sept. 15) about the pervasiveness of violence and revenge in the media, he writes, "The Bible teaches throughout that God is to take vengeance; we are not."
I heartily agree with the last clause but fear that some may use the rest of the sentence to justify their own vengeful urges, i.e., to act like God acts. If God had body and bones, I do not believe that God would have one mean or vengeful bone in his body. Jesus did have body and bones and did a superb job of showing us what God is like. Maybe God does for our own benefit exercise a loving discipline for errant behavior. But does God take vengeance on anyone? Retaliate, seek revenge for our evil or wrong behavior? Never.
