2009-10-20 issue:

The Mennonite should maintain moratorium

by David Martino, Milton, Pa.

Print Article

Thank you for asking for our opinion about The Mennonite possibly becoming, once again, a forum for dissenting voices to square off on the issue of homosexuality and inclusion ("The Dangers of Dialogue," Sept. 15). I respectfully request that you maintain the current policy of not letting the publication become a sounding board for the most vociferous and best-organized groups on both sides of the issue. If you apply your taxonomy of standards to this discussion, I think you'll come to the conclusion that few of us will engage in this discussion with the intention of opening ourselves to fundamental change of perspective. Instead, "dialogue" will again become little more than people lobbing bigger and bigger grenades over the fence at each other and ratcheting up a state of hyper vigilance and hyper activism by individuals in both parties.

As the editorial mentioned, almost 20 percent of the readership left in 1999 and 2000 due, in no small part, to the open forum The Mennonite had become. A move now to remove the moratorium will turn the letters page into an unwelcome battlefield and lead to another mass exodus of readers.
