Remembering Maynard Shelly
by Lyn Hershey, Payette, IdahoThank you for the information regarding contributions Maynard Shelly made to the Mennonite church and society (News Digest, Sept. 1). My respect and appreciation for him were formed in the back room of a plumbing business in Hattiesburg, Miss. We met there for evaluation of our day—after walking on a picket line in front of the county courthouse and going door-to-door helping and encouraging people to register and vote. Following our daily time of evaluation, we attended church services where we were inspired and encouraged by local pastors and fellow voter-registration workers. Looking back, one can see that things are much better. However, as I remember Maynard's compassion for "justice for all" that he expressed in those meetings, Maynard would recognize there is much yet to accomplish.
