What went wrong with Winnipeg summit?
by Harvey Chupp, Shipshewana, Ind.
Regarding the article, "What Went Wrong With Winnipeg Summit?" (Feb. 3): The 61 U.S. Mennonites would have been 63 were it not for the dates. These important meetings came right in the middle of two family gatherings. There are nine siblings from five states that gather every three years. On my wife’s side, we came from three states, missionaries in Bulgaria and a 93-year-old mother-in-law. I tried to convince my wife that I could fly to Winnipeg during the three-day window between the two family gatherings. Since we were hosting my extended family, which numbers in the 70s, we scratched that idea.
My point is that it may be possible that 150 others who wanted to attend faced similar dilemmas. All my life I have felt it crucial to stay connected to the larger church family, and I lament our disconnect with our Canadian brothers and sisters. To Pam Peters-Pries and Jim Schrag, from a retired pastor and current overseer and a conference junky, don’t give up. Joint meetings are valuable, and if at all possible, you will see us at the next one.
