Mennonite work team and MCC staff safe in Haiti

by Steve Kriss with Anna Groff

A short-term work team in Haiti from Souderton (Pa.) Mennonite Church is safe, as are all Mennonite Central Committee international staff in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. A major earthquake hit the country on Jan. 12. MCC accounted for all except one staff member outside of Port-Au-Prince, and continues to work at making contact.

The work team of 27 people from the Souderton congregation and Christopher Dock Mennonite High School now wait for the reopening of roads and reestablishment of regular flights for a return to the United States. They left for Labaliene in the south of Haiti on Jan. 9.

Gerry Clemmer, lead pastor at Souderton Mennonite, said "We have been in phone contact with them. They are safe and the damage where they are is minimal compared to Port-au-Prince. The biggest challenge and need for prayer is how they will return to the United States. We are in touch with airlines and state department—not certain at this point how that will happen."

Franconia Mennonite Conference waits for contact with leaders of their Partner in Mission, Grace Assembly Network, in Haiti. Pastor Lesly Bertrand, leader of the network, lives with his family within Carrefour just outside of central Port-au-Prince—one of the areas most severely affected. Grace Assembly Network consists of 24 congregations, one orphanage and three schools.

While Franconia waits for contact and word of direct needs, a fund has been established for their Partner in Mission. MCC also welcomes contributions designated to the "Haiti Earthquake" fund.
