Christine Guth of Goshen, Ind., has been selected for the 2009 "Excellence in Family Support" award by the Autism Society of Indiana. She will be honored at a banquet in Indianapolis on Nov. 21.
For the last three years, Guth has been a volunteer Program Associate with the Anabaptist Disabilities Network, giving special attention to autism spectrum disorders, mental illness, and resources for congregations. In particular, she has helped church members learn how to offer appropriate responses and services to people with autism spectrum disorders.
In addition, Guth is co-organizer of an Elkhart County support group for parents of children and youth with high functioning autism disorders. For the last three years, she has arranged for quality speakers on a variety of subjects, coordinated publicity, handled a growing mailing list (now over 200 families), and helped moderate monthly meetings of this group. She often gives personal time and care to the families who are a part of the support group.
Guth has done extensive study of autism spectrum disorders and available resources, attended conferences and workshops, and received state-sponsored training to be an advocate for people with disabilities. She earned a Master of Divinity degree from Associated Mennonite Biblical Seminary in 2007, and was licensed for specialized ministry by the Central District Conference of Mennonite Church USA in 2008.
